HE CAN LAY HIS HEAD ON ME
Another one of my friends just got a boyfriend.
I love celebrating her new love; I sincerely and wholeheartedly do. But I have a very real fear of all of my friends getting married young and me having to wait for years as the only single girl left.
But I guess that’s the problem, isn’t it? That I just don’t want to be the last one left.
As I felt myself getting sad at that thought, I decided to pick up my pen and write (computer and type, actually) because that is my favorite way to connect with God and feel most me. I knew that if I spent my time doing something I know God’s called me to do, then I wouldn’t feel so behind.
As I was writing some new pieces to add to a collection I started a while ago, I started pondering what I would title the book (if it is ever meant to become one).
When, suddenly, this sentence came to mind: “Lay your head on me.”
I immediately knew the part of the Bible that sentence was leading me to.
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” -Luke 9:58
It’s a passage in the Bible when people are telling Jesus that they will follow Him wherever He goes, but first…they want to bury their dead. They want to go back to the lives they know and are used to, and when they are finally ready to let go, they’ll come.
But that’s not what God is looking for.
He is looking for an undivided heart that is all in for Him. He is looking for people that are ready whenever He calls, and who are willing to wait if that’s what He has for them.
I once had a sweet lady from church (who knew nothing about me, btw) come up to me during prayer time and ask if I had something specific I was praying for.
I did. It was about relationships and the fact that the timeline I had set for myself wasn't adding up how I planned for it to. But I didn't want to be vulnerable enough to admit that. So I told her that she could pray about college.
It was obvious she could tell that wasn’t the real thing I was asking God for, yet that moment has stuck with me ever since. Because before she prayed for me, she quoted Matthew 6:33, where Jesus calls us to seek first His Kingdom.
So now, whenever I think about who my person might be, I think of that verse.
Which is why I picked up my pen. And it’s why I can rest. Because I trust Jesus, and I am following Him. He is a good author, and I know it. If He says that I am better in this season of my life being alone with Him, I believe it. I can already see it.
Foxes have dens and birds have nests,
and He can lay His head on me.
